You could have put the make-up of any nondescript humanoid race on them and their characters still would have worked unchanged.Īnd, like how the films would always reduce the Federation down to Earth, Romulus being gone suddenly meant the Romulan Empire was gone. Either way they bore little resemblance to the type we usually saw on screen, and being Romulan did not seem to figure into the characters. We had Romulans as the enemy, but they were space miners who were either in the area or propelled by survivors of the military as vessels of vengeance. Attempts were made in books to explain it but it seemed like everyone was keeping it vague in case the TV and film writers went in a different direction. How a single supernova did this was never made clear.
STAR TREK TNG PARALLELS MOVIE
The senate dying isn't too big an issue to handwave away by the time the next bit of media comes around (which they did), but having Romulans in one movie makes them less likely to use it the next.īut I was wrong, after a 7 year gap they brought the Romulans back just to wipe them out.

The Romulan characters acted like their TNG counterparts, but were supplanted by this hitherto unknown Reman species, whose whole existence seems to be borne by the fact that there was a Romulus and Remus in the ancient Roman myth. I always hoped to explore them in more detail, but that seems impossible now. And I loved their aesthetic.įor a time, the Cardassians took their thematic place but they didn't have the sinister mystery or imposing power of the Romulans. They took themselves seriously and played for keeps. They had schemes and mysteries and weren't afriad to bring out the big guns to back them up. The Romulans took the place of Cold War stand-ins after Star Trek 6.

The Klingons were becoming more jokey, their only tactics were brute force, and you could usually switch them to die-hard allies with a single speech about honor. I always liked the Romulans as they were portrayed in TNG/DS9/VOY.
